A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future free from concern.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – originating from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently declared “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.
A Future Secured
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: joyful, diverse, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Every time, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
