American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty without pay during the government shutdown, the transport chief has announced.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were instructed to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been absent, causing terminals to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks due to weather and other issues.

Over three thousand American flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy said he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I observe the stress," Duffy remarked in an discussion on a weekend program, adding that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to secure another source of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields said flights would be held up due to a lack of employees - one of the highest after the shutdown started.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would reduce the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.
