Biden Bowl, Anyone? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Charity

Relinquishing unneeded offerings might be seen as somewhat rude – except if it's done the right way.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 items bestowed upon her by foreign dignitaries on official trips. The eclectic collection reportedly features objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.

The presents, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. They will be sold to the highest bidder by a Rome-based auction firm. The specific date is yet to be set, but the goal is to hold the auction before Christmas, with all funds raised donated to a selection of charitable causes.

Storage Room Treasures

The items reportedly stored in a secure area on the upper level of the government headquarters. Sources state that Meloni furthermore intending to auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been stored away over a long period.

The full gift list remains disclosed, but partial details were revealed earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was reviewed by officials. The discussion raised whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. By law, a prime minister cannot take home presents exceeding €300.

An International Array of Presents

Notable gifts feature:

  • A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from the Indian leader.
  • A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Additional objects including cosmetics, a board, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the oddest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.

Political Context

Meloni has been credited, mostly from her allies, with winning over global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the international platform once again.

The forthcoming sale symbolizes a unconventional way to deal with the protocol gifts that are collected during a political career.
