Much like Storm Claudia swept through the north-west the prior day, Manchester City blew Manchester United aside at the Etihad. It was a statement three goal victory for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their title credentials as they reinforced their standing at the top of the table.

Successive Losses for United

This result signalled successive Women's Super League losses for Skinner's side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the table toppers with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

United’s capacity to balance domestic and European soccer with a small roster has been a hotly discussed topic since they secured entry to the European competition. Looking at the calendar, it always appeared this was the week that would seriously challenge this ability. Sadly for the away side, they appeared tired from start to finish, the memorable win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Tactical Shifts

Skinner had sought to freshen things up with a several adjustments. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all brought vigor, although the omission of the on-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in comparison, have fewer loading issues. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from last week’s win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since recovering from a fitness issue.

Commanding Opening Period

The most obvious change came from Skinner at the break as Malard came on for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was ineffective to shift the momentum of the game. Former City player Jess Park came nearest, rattling the upright, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and did not manage to record a one shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have increased their cushion when a superb Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the winning team. After failing to beat any team who placed above them in the prior term, City's side now have successes against the Gunners and United to position them in a strong position after nine games.
