The gravest projected effects of the climate crisis for the UK have been outlined by scientists, ranging from a scorching 4C rise in temperatures to a two-metre surge in sea levels. A separate possibility predicts a drop of 6C in temperature following the collapse of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset food production and power requirements.

Possible Extremes, Not Predictions

These impacts, certain ones are linked to critical climate thresholds, are viewed as low probability but credible. The researchers explained that these scenarios addressed a shortfall in forecasting that had rendered the UK unprepared for catastrophic possibilities.

"The severe weather events we have detailed aren’t predictions, but they are credible," stated the professor who directed the study. "The UK has been planning without the tools to assess catastrophic outcomes. We've now given decision-makers what they need to prepare for environmental results they pray never occur, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Range of Severe Conditions Projections

Another collection of worst-case scenarios details the potential extent of severe conditions between now and the year 2100. These indicate that temperatures could skyrocket in some months by up to 6C above historical levels, while precipitation could be 300% of normal levels.

The likelihood of the catastrophic events happening could not be calculated due to a lack of certainty about what measures will be implemented to combat global warming and how the climate system will behave. This approach was likened to national security risk assessments or stress tests for economic stability.

  • Severe Heating: Global temperatures exceeding 4C by 2100 could occur if climate action breaks down or if strong feedback loops like the Amazon basin becoming a net carbon source release its huge repository of carbon. This would result in extreme and prolonged heatwaves and dry spells hitting the UK in summer.
  • Ocean Circulation Failure: A major ocean current, the AMOC, is losing strength and showing signs of collapse due to climate change. The project was commissioned as part of a national climate resilience programme. Earlier reports have cautioned that insufficient focus was being given to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.

Official experts has said that the UK must "adapt to 2C" and examine the risks for four degrees. Earlier government strategies have been described as being "inadequate" by certain experts.

A government spokesperson noted: "Climate change is at the heart of our national priorities, both building resilience and establishing itself as a renewable energy leader. It is essential that the UK is ready for the impacts."
