Reece Walsh Shines as Dominant The Kangaroos Defeat The Hosts Away in First Ashes Test
The home side's attacking frailties were exposed and punished by a clinical Australian side as the tourists secured a worryingly straightforward victory in the first match of the rugby league Ashes series.
The England coach's side had spoken effusively about their motivation going into the opening series for 22 years, and they were definitely full of endeavour at Wembley. However, in the key instances, it was the reigning title holders who displayed more composure in front of a historic crowd for an Ashes Test in the United Kingdom of more than 60,000.
Brilliant Display from Reece Walsh
Guided by an outstanding display in attack and defence from club star Walsh, the Kangaroos were deserving and convincing winners in the first match of the three-match series, meaning the hosts must triumph at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium next Saturday to keep alive their hopes of a series victory since 1970.
England will have to be much better with the ball if they are to accomplish that goal. On several instances in the first half, the home team found themselves in advantageous situations but they were unable to cross for any points. That was in large measure thanks to Walsh, who executed two superb interceptions.
Crucial Plays of the Game
The first occurred as Herbie Farnworth seemed destined to put Dom Young in for what would have been the opening try, then the fullback denied Lewis as the break neared. By then, the Australians had taken the lead as Reece Walsh himself finished a wonderful move.
Nathan Cleary added the extras before adding a penalty on the brink of the interval to establish a two-score advantage. It was a pivotal point, as was the try for Angus Crichton shortly after the restart which made it 14-0 in favor of the Kangaroos. England now had to cross the line thrice and that seemed to halt their drive.
If there were any doubt about the winners, they were decisively settled with a quarter-hour to go. Cameron Munster’s line break was backed up by Angus Crichton, who broke through Jack Welsby for Australia’s third try.
That made it 20-0 and there was further humiliation in the closing stages as Walsh completed another scintillating move, exploiting a weary and visibly shot England defensive line for his second.
Final Score and Outlook
By then, local supporters had begun to leave early and many did not see Daryl Clark’s late try, which at least prevented the home side finishing scoreless. However, there are many issues for the coach to address going into what is now a do-or-die Test next weekend.
