The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 people were killed and over 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who are known at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the events leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
