The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Acquired by American Investment Giant.
An iconic resort island located on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group for a sum said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication of the family owners has built in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to standard approvals from regulators.
The family released a statement noting they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the land is built upon, including a substantial range of amenities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.

Blackstone has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
