The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Inclusion in England's Ashes Team

England have opted for a twelve-player selection just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a unexpected place.

Bashir's inclusion indicates that the visiting team will delay until the day of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man squad, showing there are no doubts about their fast bowler's condition.

The other seamers complete the bowling group, with Carse expected to miss out if Bashir makes the final team.

Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers

The England coach had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged five previous Tests.

In those games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only 40 to spin.

Of those 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.

On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side relying on seamers is still the probable choice.

Spin Options Weighed

There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to provide some spin while also strengthening the lower order.

But McCullum has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.

In July, Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still the English best spinner.”

“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the past in Australian pitches,” he said of slow bowling in matches Down Under.

“I won't let my secrets out so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
