Why Real Madrid Have 'Total Trust' in Teenager Pitarch
When an teenage makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.
During his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent Through The Academy
The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.
He worked his way up to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'
During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him playing time in pre-season.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his debut.
"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has taken it with performances that have defied his age and experience.
"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I realize fans might be astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.
"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they play in a official senior international match.
He has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.
In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."
This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim decided to represent Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for over an hour in the two-one win at City, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club pursue trophies to come.
Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he said after the success at Manchester.
